Congratulations Cliff Dargonne – Active Sussex Shining Light 2014
Nominated by Active Sussex, Cliff Dargonne has been nominated the Shining Light for 2014. Cliff is being passed on the baton from 2013 Shining Light Amanda Wilkins.
Cliff Dargonne has been nominated as the Shining Light 2014 for Active Sussex because of his overwhelming commitment to sport and how he has developed his own Community Games event 'The Denton Challenge.'
An avid Community Games supporter since 2012, three years down the line and Cliff’s enthusiasm has grown and grown. Always looking at new ways to incorporate sport into the local community, Cliff has ambitious plans to include a running event in the next Community Games, to showcase the sport and give the event a new dimension.
Cliff is not only a Community Games organiser but he is a Level 2 Kayak Coach at the local club Martlets, a volunteer Run Leader with Run England and organises his own 'Back to Running' group in the local area. Cliff epitomises the true meaning of a sports volunteer.
Cliff's biggest achievement has been to summit Mount Everest in 2003 the 50th anniversary year. He also went on to climb Mt Vinson in Antarctica, and Carstansz Pyramid in Indonesia to become one of the few Britons to successfully complete the ‘Seven Summits’, the challenge of climbing the highest peak on each of the seven continents!
Gina Rogers from Active Sussex said “Cliff's commitment to sport is inspiring a couldn't think of a better person to receive this award.”
About his involvement in Community Games, Cliff said “The Community Games event has been a great way to unite the local sports and social groups into one great summer spectacular event; raising awareness of the other groups that are active in our area, when sometimes volunteers can feel that they are the only people involved. My coordinating role in this has allowed me to get to know some of the other leaders with whom I may never have come into contact, and improve connections across the community.”
