Independent Community Games Evaluation Published

The aim of the evaluation study was to assess whether the programme had achieved its outputs, and to present evidence about the impact of the Community Games programme. It is based on 71 semi-structured interviews and 1,398 on-line survey responses from Community Games Organisers (CGOs), volunteers and participants involved in local events. The headline findings are:
1. Community Games are a resounding success: in the view of the organisers, volunteers, participants and partners.
2. The Community Games principles helped to make it a success: led by volunteers from the community, wide range of activities and an opening or closing ceremony to create those special shared moments.
3. The impact of the Games was greater than initially anticipated, creating and rekindling the community spirit, providing a sense of belonging, encouraging new and stronger friendships, and making people feel more positive about their communities.
4. Volunteering made the Games happen: it was an enjoyable and satisfying experience resulting in a groundswell of volunteers wanting to support future events, with 97% of volunteers saying they would do so again and80% of participants saying they would maybe consider volunteering
5. 97% of Community Games Organisers and volunteers felt proud that they were doing something good for the community and felt a sense of achievement
6. Activities at the events were inspiring, with 54% of participants trying out a new sport, of which 22% did no regular sport or physical activity. After attending the events, 50% of participants were more motivated to take up or do more sports and be more active and 34% were more motivated to do more arts and culture.
7. The events have already started to create a legacy in their own communities with 60% of organisers confirming that they will be running their events again
