Houghton Community Games

Houghton on the Hill in Leicestershire made the most of the Bank Holiday weekend to run their Community Games, celebrating with a torch relay using an original London 1948 torch.

With the highlight being a visiting local London 2012 torchbearer, participants between the ages of three and ninety came together to compete and celebrate the Olympic Games coming to the UK, taking part in a number of sports and activities including  scrabble, table-tennis and table football.

Village clubs and societies teamed up to attend the event, attracting over two hundred people to Houghton’s village hall with the help and support of more than twenty volunteers.

Games Organiser Hazel McSweeney highlighted the buzz the Games brought to the village and in particular the new friends made throughout the weekend.

The success of the day and enthusiasm for the activities on offer has lead to the formation of Houghton’s first table-tennis club and definite plans for an even bigger event next year.
